Many of the memories we have of growing up in Maple exist because of the volunteer work our parents did. On April 27th, 2022 the City of Vaughan recognized citizens for their volunteer work. My dad, Hugh Cook, was recognized at this event. A resident of Maple for more than 60 years, dad is still volunteering with the Vaughan Historical Society at the age of 89. Below is some of what he has done over the past 60+ years.
In hockey he coached and served on the Maple Minor Hockey Association Executive.
In baseball he helped build the ball diamonds, umpired and coached softball, hardball and slo-pitch.
He performed various roles with the Maple Area Recreation Committee, including President.
He was Maple’s representative for 3 Vaughan Days.
He was the Treasurer of the Vaughan Historical Society and has been a member of this group for 32 years.
In 1991 he led a group from the Genealogical Society as they transcribed the City of Vaughan cemeteries.
He prepared and printed the book on the Maple Knit-Wits for the Vaughan Historical Society.
He wrote and self-published a non-profit book entitled “Some of Vaughan’s Pictorial Past”.
He was a reviewer for “Canadian Review of Materials”, an all-volunteer publication that features reviews of books and other materials that are authored, illustrated, and/or published by Canadians and that are produced for/of interest to children and adolescents. The books that he reviewed were donated to the Vaughan Library.
He was the coordinator for Senior Badminton tournaments.
He was the librarian for Ontario Genealogical Section’s section family history room in the Richmond Hill library.
The photo includes dad and Councillor Marilyn Iafrate who presented him with his certificate of recognition.
Thanks to all the parents who gave their time and effort over the years.
